When colon cancer develops, it reaches the last stage of its evolution, which is called colon cancer stage four. In stage four, the cancer spreads to other parts of the body, thing that makes the disease more difficult to cure. Although the cancerous tumors can spread to any part of the body, they usually spread to the lungs and even more common to the liver. Metastatic colon cancer in liver can be diagnosed at any moment of the cancer spread, and unfortunately the cancer is diagnosed in this last stage because symptoms do not make the cancer presence felt until the tumors have grown and passed through the colon wall. This is way doctors may discover the cancers metastases in the liver first, and than establish through medical tests that they are not primary tumors, but secondary metastatic tumors created because of colon cancer. The symptoms may include pain, painless and other hepatic effects, such as the lack of appetite and the yellowness of the nails and eyes. Other symptoms may be felt depending on the patient general evolution and health.

The cure of the phase of colon cancer in which the cancer spreads is not easy at all because the treatment must regard both the primary and secondary tumors and also it must stop the cancer spread. This is way chemotherapy is administrated. The powerful drugs can stop the tumors spread, but it can also make the cancerous tumors withdraw. This is the main reason way chemotherapy is used in the last two stages, and in some cases it works. Sometimes surgery can not be performed. The surgical intervention is made with the purpose to remove colon cancer tumors. But these interventions are successful when the cancer has not left its initial location or when the cancer has not spread. But when colon cancer do creates metastases, the spread is made using the blood or lymphatic system, which is infected by the cancerous tumor and so the cancer can actually spread.
