Diet For Colon Cancer Patients

After being diagnosed with colon cancer, a patient has to have a diet in order to help his body fight with the disease. Diet for colon cancer patients usually contains low fat foods and high rich fiber and vitamins foods.

However, you have to have a rich alimentation to be able to fight against colon cancer, mostly if you are under chemotherapy, which is the administration of many powerful dugs that can make your body very weak. Eating enough calories to keep your body strength is a must in a colon cancer patient’s diet. This fact is even more important nowadays because of the increased inters accorded to the immune system in the colon cancer treatment.

However, you may notice that because of the drugs that you take, your appetite has decreased, and the ability of you body to digest food is even lower. Your body, because of the tumors may not be able anymore to absorb and use all the nutrients form food. To reduce these colon cancer treatments side effects you should eat many meals per day with high nutritious foods. You should also drink fluids after you have eaten.

Many colon cancer patients decide to take vitamins or mineral supplements to feel the lack of those that body should contain. However, some antioxidants such as vitamins C and E can interfere with chemotherapy's ability to kill cancer cells. Vitamin D is also used by colon cancer patients and recent studies have shown that it has good effects against the tumor.

Diet for colon cancer patients should include whole grains, vegetables and fruits, legumes, non fatty fish, chicken and meats, that provides you body carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Some vegetables actually have cancer preventive components, such as broccoli, cabbage, kale, winter squash and cauliflower.

Fats and proteins are also important for colon cancer patients. They include olive oil and omega-3 or fish oil. You should try to eat only white meat, such as fish meat or chicken meat and avoid the red one, which is harder to digest, such as pork meat. No matter which one you choose, the meat you eat has to be low fat.

The diet for colon cancer patients can play an important role in the strengthening of the immune system. If the immune system is healthy, the cancerous cells have a difficulty in growing and it can determine the tumors withdraw. This is the reason way diets are recommended in all cancer types, not only for colon cancer. Patients that are under chemotherapy have to respect a colon cancer diet more seriously than the ones that had only a surgical intervention, because of the many different drugs administrated and the several medical interventions made in time.
