Computerized Axial Tomography Colon Cancer

Colon cancer diagnosis is usually given by the oncologist after a screening procedure. Screenings can be used to diagnose colon cancer right after forming and sometimes to discover the potential of a cancer developing even before it was actually formed.

However, if some threats are found, through a screening a doctor can not say for sure if it is actually colon cancer and which is the exact stage of the disease. He must first take a biopsy sample and then make the tests that can establish if there is cancer or not.

So, after colon cancer diagnosis in the first phase, other tests are made white the purpose to establish the exact stage of the cancer, if it has passed the colon wall and where it has spread in the body. This whole process is made with the only purpose to diagnose the stage of the cancer, because depending on its evolution treatment is administrated. Colon cancer treatment can be very different in different stages and this is way it is very important to know where you are standing.

Here are the tests that can be used in the staging process. One of the most common is a CT scan. This is also called a computerized axial tomography for colon cancer staging because in such an intervention pictures all over the body are taken and they are made by a computer linked to an x-ray machine. This way a doctor can establish exactly the stage of the cancer and treatment can start. The computerized axial tomography for colon cancer diagnosis can be one of the best ways to know exactly which that stage is.

However, there are also other possible interventions for colon cancer staging that can be performed, and that actually are recommended by many doctors. One of them is the lymph node biopsy in which a part of the lymph node is removed, after which medical test are made under a microscope. Surgery can also be made with the purpose to see how far the cancer has spread in the body. However, not all doctors recommend it.

So, as already said it is very important to know the exact stage of the cancer to establish the most appropriate treatment for it. In the first stages surgery can be made and the cancer can be easily removed, but in the most advanced stages, the cancer is very difficult to cure, sometimes almost impossible.

In such situations patients are submitted to chemotherapy and also to radiation therapy. The way those treatments are going to work will vary form one patient to another, so no doctor can tell you for sure if you are going to be cure of colon cancer or not.
