According to these studies, a dose of 300 mg of aspirin daily for a period of 5 years, offers protection against colon cancer. Normally, a long time use of aspirin is not recommended by doctors because of the negative effects that it may have on the stomach, but the authors of these studies argue that those whoa are at an increased risk in contracting colon cancer must use aspirin and vitamins.

British researchers have found also, after making several tests, that the administration of aspirin daily for a period of five years can reduce the incidence of colon cancer by 74%. The protective effect of aspirin has been reported in people who had relatives who suffered of this type of cancer, taking in account that the family history in colon cancer related cases usually increases the risk of a seriously affection by two or four times.
Other early studies have also associated aspirin with the reducing of the risk of colon cancer development by blocking an enzyme, COX-2, which favors the inflammatory processes and tumor cell division level. However, despite the benefits they bring to our health, aspirin can cause in some cases stomach pain and even bleeding from stomach ulcer. That is way many doctors consider that further studies are needed and carefully controlled tests phases before the drug can be formally recommended to patients suffering from colon cancer.
The latest study found that this drug can prevent also death caused by colon cancer. They followed the effects of aspirin on the 1279 patients, men and women suffering from colon cancer which had already spread to other parts of the body. It was found that patients who regularly took aspirin after being diagnosed with colon cancer are 30 percent less at a risk of death from this disease compared to patients who are not taking aspirin.

So, after 20 years of studies, American researchers have found out that aspirin reduces with 30 percent the risk of colon cancer development. Aspirin can help a colon cancer patient to control the recurrence of the disease after it was removed in the first place usually trough surgery. However, colon cancer is the second cause in cancer related cases, which makes the most victims in the United States after lung cancer, with more than 50,000 patients each year. So, aspirin is just one step in colon cancer prevention and treatment.
